“This woman is a machine,” I thought to myself. (At least I think I said it to myself. I sometimes have a habit of speaking out loud the running commentary that takes place in my head.)
I was still on my first set of shoulder raises and the woman next to me at Orange Theory had already moved onto her burpees (with perfect form I might add), two exercises past me in the rotation.
Sure, she was younger than me but I can usually hold my own at OT, especially in the weight room.
This woman, however, was running circles around me.
It’s not like I’m the best in class by any means. But I do take kind of a secret, gleeful pride being able to hang with women half my age.
Alas, hang I did not today. Today it was a joke. Why, oh why, did I have to pick the rower next to hers when class started?
It didn’t help matters when we moved to the treadmill and I happened to glance over and she was a solid 2 mph ahead of me throughout the entire interval workout. Guess that’s not too surprising, though, since I am a slow runner. (Yes, I can go far apparently; just not very fast.)
I know. Everyone always tells you never to compare yourself to others because you’ll tend to compare your weaknesses to their strengths.
Folks also tell me when they learn that I am an estate planning lawyer that they do not need to plan yet because they “don’t have an estate” ha ha.
Phooey, I say. Everyone has an estate.
Your estate may not be equivalent to Bill Gates or Mark Cuban, but you have one.
You may be in your building/working years as most of my clients are, but you have an estate.
Do not compare yourself to your neighbors thinking that they need to plan and you don’t because they are richer, more educated, or have a higher income than you.
Regardless of your station in life, you plan so that you can protect what you do have from unnecessary taxes, legal fees, and government interference.
You plan to protect your loved ones and to ensure that your children are raised by the people you choose, not those chosen by the courts.
You plan because it’s the honorable thing to do for your family, whether it’s a simple written plan or a complex one.
Whether you’re a “planning virgin” or already have an existing plan, our exclusive Family Succession Strategy Sessions are a hit with Florida residents. You can reserve yours online here.
Despite my discouraging workout this morning (it was actually pretty good with 21 splat points), I managed to shake it off and remember that I am not competing with anyone but myself.
So too it is with your Family Succession Planning. You are not competing with your neighbor.
Notwithstanding, tomorrow is another day and now that I know what this woman looks like, I’ll be sure to choose a treadmill far away from hers next time!
Kristen “Getting My Arse Kicked at OT” Marks
P.S. One of my email subscribers, a 25 week pregnant physician having mobility issues, took me up on my offer to visit my Rolfer, Sharalee Hoelscher (you can read about her here). Here was her text to me following her appointment:
“I loved Sharalee! She honestly gave me immediate relief after fixing my “stuck SI joint.” The medical side of me is baffled but it worked and I felt much better immediately after she did it. I’m sooo thankful that you posted about her because I never would have found her. I only wish I would have gone sooner! Going back on Tuesday!”
If you are having any type of movement issues or pain when you move, you might want to give Sharalee a jingle to see what she can do. I tell everyone that she is my personal miracle worker. Her number is 850-450-8508.
