WHY PLAN AHEAD

A Plan Shaped Around Your Life

Planning ahead helps the people you love understand your wishes and know who can make important decisions. At My Pink Lawyer®, our Pensacola attorneys walk Florida families through each choice and explain it in everyday terms. Our Family Succession Plans™ are built around your family, so every plan reflects the people and priorities that matter most to you.

Your plan can bring together wills, trusts, health care directions, and financial powers of attorney, based on your family's needs. It may also help reduce confusion for the loved ones who carry out your wishes.

What Your Plan Can Cover

A plan can address both the decisions someone may need to make for you and the wishes you want your loved ones to understand. Your attorney can help you decide which tools fit your family.

Wills and Guardianship

Record how you want your property handled and who you'd want to care for minor children. You can also discuss arrangements for pets and treasured personal items.

Trusts

Set instructions for how certain assets are managed and passed on. Depending on your circumstances, a trust may help you plan ahead, avoid delays, or provide for a loved one, including special needs trusts.

Health Care Planning

Put your medical preferences in writing and name a trusted person to speak for you if you can't make decisions yourself.

Financial Powers of Attorney

Choose someone you trust to handle financial matters if you become unable to manage them yourself.

Property and Tax Considerations

When relevant, talk through how your Florida home, beneficiary choices, and possible estate or gift taxes fit into the larger plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an estate plan include?

A complete plan often includes a will, a trust when it fits your situation, a health care surrogate designation, and a financial power of attorney. Your attorney will help you decide which documents make sense for your family.

Do I need a trust, or is a will enough?

It depends on your family and your goals. A will states your wishes and names who will care for minor children. A trust can also help manage assets, plan for incapacity, and in some cases help your family avoid delays. Your attorney can explain the differences and help you choose.

I don't have a large estate. Do I still need a plan?

Yes. A plan isn't only for people with significant wealth. It helps your family know your wishes, names who can make decisions for you, and can make a hard time easier for the people you love.

What happens if I become unable to make decisions for myself?

Without a plan, your family may have to ask a court for permission to act on your behalf. A health care surrogate designation and a financial power of attorney let you choose the people you trust now.

How often should I update my estate plan?

We recommend reviewing your plan after major life events, such as marriage, divorce, a new child or grandchild, a move, or a significant change in your finances. It's also a good idea to review it every few years.

Can I plan for a loved one with special needs?

Yes. A special needs trust can help provide for a loved one while helping protect their eligibility for public benefits. Learn more about our special needs planning services.
